Chugger
he inspiration for the Chugger-boat came because my Dad and I like to camp, fish, and travel the remote wilderness areas. We have traveled 4 times to Alaska, camping and fishing between Fairbanks and the Arctic Ocean. On one of those trips Dad said that he’d like to float/paddle down the Yukon River in the kayaks. I’m 50 and he’s 75 years old. I explained that my posterior would not agree to a 1500-mile kayak trip and pointed out that there were few chances to change your mind once you start. Most of the trip would be long stretches of places with low/no banks. So, I suggested that we build a boat that would shelter us from the rain and that we could sleep on. I explained that we could build a barebones boat for a couple hundred dollars. We’d simply take the motor off when we arrived at the Bearing Sea and donate the boat to the local Indians. Then we could take the motor and equipment back via a floatplane or on the Alaskan Marine Highway ferry. Anyway, that’s what got me started thinking about a minimalist cruiser. It was doubtful that we would ever take the time to actually trailer a boat to the Yukon River, since it is more than 5000 miles as the crow flies, just to put the boat in the water. Still, I eventually decided I wanted a full-blown micro cruiser for water-camping excursions (we could always do the barebones one if we actually decided to do the Yukon).

Old Sport
Old Sport is a “custom classic” owned by Kent and Ann Blauer. Kent transformed a skeleton of a 1964 15 foot runabout into an 18 foot mahogany and teak jewel.
She has an extended and slanted transom with storage and a new interior, instrumentation, all teak decking, and a custom windshield. The rebuilt Ford 289 engine gives her a top speed of almost 40 MPH.
